Success According to… HEROES

As I impatiently await the new seasons of my favorite TV shows, I thought I’d take a fun look at the inspirational success strategies I’ve learned from countless hours in front of the tube. First up, Heroes, which is on NBC’s Monday night lineup. If you haven’t watched it, it’s “an epic drama that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities.”

  1. Everyone needs a mantra. (“Save the Cheerleader, Save the World”)
  2. After a failed business, opportunity, interview or job, sometimes you need to pull back and reconnect with your passion and talents before moving forward. (Hiro has trouble accessing his power after being unable to save the life of the woman he loves)
  3. Don’t carry the burdens of responsibility on your shoulders. Turn to mentors, friends, family and even strangers for help to meet your goals. (Peter Petrelli thought he was the only one who could save the world, but he needed help from others to actually do it.)
  4. Sometimes the quest for perfection can be our ultimate downfall. (Sylar was trying to be everything his mother wanted him to be, which eventually led to her death and the deaths of others. He’s also an example of what can happen to you if you don’t resolve your parental issues…)
  5. After years of working for one company, it’s understandable if you no longer see eye-to-eye with the organization’s vision. People’s ideals and viewpoints change as they get older and experience the various stages of life. That just means it’s time to move on. (When H.R.G. started his career, he shared the company’s vision. After becoming a parent, his perspectives changed and he eventually helped bring the company down.)
